About Sébastien Gauthier

Sébastien Gauthier is a filmmaker, dome specialist, 360° cinematographer (DOP) and a fulldome film director. His reputation in the planetarium community is well established through his stunning immersive visuals, technical expertise, award-winning films and innovative contributions to the thriving dome milieu.

Since his first release in 2009, he has worked on more than twenty fulldome productions including the publicly acclaimed feature films One Sky, Exo and Aurōrae (Best Film in Toulouse, Jena and Brno fulldome film festivals). Over the years, he has developed an innovative and unique approach to immersive cinematography with an inspiring, educational and emotional narrative that blends powerful visuals, elegant scenarios and high quality soundtracks.

As a cinematographer, Sébastien Gauthier has filmed all over the world, whether in arid deserts, high altitude mountains, underwater, 2,000 meters deep in the earth's crust, in very cold temperatures or in low light situations, always in search of spectacular images of nature, the universe and the amazing inhabitants of planet Earth.

Sébastien Gauthier has been appointed head of programming at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium in Montreal, which was inaugurated in 2013, a position he held until 2019. In a short period of time, he set up a fulldome production department from scratch, hiring and training a team of artists and technicians, establishing a new production workflow and setting up a specialized fulldome render farm. The department's productions were a huge success and the planetarium quickly grew to become a hot spot in Montreal and known as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking fulldome film producers on the international planetarium scene.

With a deep understanding of software and technologies related to science communication, he trained many museums presenters to use advanced equipment and planetarium software over the past twenty years.

As a planetarium specialist for more than twenty years, Sébastien Gauthier has worked on a number of major museum projects for clients such as the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, the Science Center of Iowa, the Cité de l’énergie in Shawinigan, and for the Montreal Pavilion in Shanghai, to name just a few.

Sébastien Gauthier is known for his enthusiasm and passion for popularizing science. He has made numerous public appearances on radio and television and is regularly seen giving astronomy talks to a variety of audiences.
